Rutherglen
Rutherglen enjoys a special place in the history of Australian wines. With the first vines planted in the mid-1800s, by the late 19th century, Rutherford accounted for almost one third of all Australian wine production. While the times have left Rutherford behind to a degree , it’s heritage and distinction live on.
In Rutherglen, the tasting experience is … a bit different! The tasting lists in Rutherglen (and indeed the number of grape varieties each winery produces) are extensive. So much so, where we might get through six wineries in a normal day in professional mode, even the highest tolerance would be challenged to get through more than three tastings in Rutherglen. Rutherglen is the home of the Durif varietal and fortified wines but don’t overlook what the region can achieve with other red varietals.
The focus in Rutherglen is on wine-making. With a couple exceptions, don’t expect the opulent facades of the Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula. Rather, be prepared for tastings of 20+ quality wines at each stop!
If you only have a weekend, you don’t have a hope of visiting every winery, so why not be sure you’ve visited the best 🙂 All the more reason to see our reviews for the best stops in Rutherglen.
Finally, Tastes of Rutherglen held in March every year offers a fantastic opportunity to visit the region’s best with no hassle. Perhaps our favourite event on the AUS wine calendar!
