Hobart – Four Wines & Wineries We’re Loving from AUS’ Most Beautiful Wine City

What a treat to be travelling again! And how refreshing to finally return to AUS’ coolest climate wine state – a place where wines are marked by elegance, strong acid backbones, and great aging potential – a big change from the more typical fruit-forward and jammy affairs we seemed to find ourselves drinking during lockdown.

With ten or so world class cellar doors within half an hour from Hobart, it really is hard to beat as a wine weekend destination. On our most recent trip, here are four drops we absolutely loved!

* Craigow Vineyard 2019 White Blend – A Riesling / Gewurztraminer / Chardonnay blend? Yes please! An engaging nose of autumn musk segues into a deep, dark and flavourful wine on the palate. Classic Craigow in its smooth polish with suggestive flavour hints gently nudging here and there. This wine is deep enough to match even the spiciest curries.

* Coal Valley Vineyard 2017 Estate Pinot Noir – As far as we’re concerned, this is what Pinot Noir is all about. At first blush, the wine boasts some of the funkier Pinot elements we love – autumnal foliage, scrub brush, and black tea. But these engaging flavour elements are so well integrated with the primary cherry fruit flavour, that the overall experience is all finesse and grace. What great Pinot is all about.

* Domaine A 2015 Petit a – With its beautiful wafting nose, this Bordeaux blend is somehow soft, plush, rich, and complex all at the same time – like a glowing pillow of deliciousness. An exquisite, necessary, quintessential Bordeaux blend. The soft complexity is masterfully integrated. Come see what the Domaine A hype is all about, and for only $40 at that!

* Pooley Wines 2021 Chardonnay – Such a beautifully balanced wine that dances lithely on the palate. A soft peach front palate melts slowly into a gentle caramel finish with lashes of apricot all throughout. One wants to say “creme brulee notes”, but this wine is far too sophisticated for such a crass descriptor. Banished altogether is the pinchy lemon zest that mars too many AUS Chardonnays. This one is a study in gentle elegance.
