Blowfly Vertical – Bedlam in the Kingdom of Petit Verdot!

Blowfly must be Australia’s most intriguing winery. It offers a suite of unique wine experiences that are simply unmatched. (And so refreshing from the monotonous and neutered fare offered at most of the big retailers!) Viz, we recently got ahold of four vintages of Blowfly’s Petit Verdot (2006-09). Hard enough to find Petit Verdot as a single varietal in Australia, let alone four vintages of such marked diversity to work through. We have said before that Blowfly (or their wild vineyard anyway!) produces some of the most striking wines you’ll find, and their Petit Verdot is no exception!

See our tasting notes below. If you haven’t checked out Blowfly yet, you’re missing some pretty cool stuff (we have no affiliation)…

* Blowfly 2006 Petit Verdot – Vibrant violet in hue. The nose belies the immediate nobility of an aged and well crafted wine. Surprisingly gentle in its attack but picks up plenty of heat into the finish. The flavour is all brandied raspberry souffle. After a few sips, one realises this wine is somehow magically light and heavy all at once.

* Blowfly 2007 Petit Verdot – This is one plucky wine! The nose is briary and punchy, but goodness the taste experience! Velvety posh berries float around the palate as you savour the varied expressions of plump fruit. Juicy, juicy, juicy… round, bright and plump blueberry flavours identify the varietal in this damn fine wine!

* Blowfly 2008 Petit Verdot – What a contrast this one is! The more savoury colour leaning towards the brownish register rings true in a wine that is spicy, savoury, and sharp. Dry and earthy, with leather notes, it’s as if the soil traveled straight through the root and into the fruit! (If we tasted it blind, we might have guessed Mataro…) This is an excellent food wine that would complement something like five spice duck oh so perfectly. Could these wines really hail from the same vineyard?!?!?

* Blowfly 2009 Petit Verdot – This one is tart cranberry with a generous splash of bitters on the finish. Again, a serious food wine that calls out for a dark meat of equal stature. You will re-envision what you thought Petit Verdot can do! What an incredible flight of wines.

Unique tasting experiences such as the one described above are #WhyWeLoveWine. What a magical exploration. Thank you, Blowfly!
