McHenry Hohnen 2016 Rocky Road Cab Merlot – 92 Points

That tenacious nudge. The tendrils of the cab sav’s lusty flavours inch their way forward, but always refined by the merlot’s polish and shine. Dark chocolate, bramble, and mild winter spices – plump but engaging yum!  This wine is built off great fruit. The bottle notes say it most succinctly: “a damn fine wine.”

Australian “Cab Merlots” are a bit of a dialectic. Most are “drink now” grape bubble gum, but the best rival France and can run for years. This excellent Bordeaux blend plants its feet firmly toward the latter, and although five years old has years left to run yet.

Score: 92/100 (drinking in 2021)

Still has at least three great years left, but rewarding right now.
