An Incredible Blowfly Vertical Shiraz Tasting

We recently had the opportunity to do a vertical tasting of some of Blowfly’s striking Shiraz. “Striking” really is the word for all the Blowfly wines we have tried. The Northern Slopes Zone is not a well-known wine region (and indeed, Blowfly is one of the only two or three wineries we know therefrom), but Blowfly’s wines are all notable. They seem to pull so much of their flavour right out of the volcanic earth and exude raw, lusty power. And geez are they age-worthy. “Concern” is usually our primary feeling when we pull out Australian wines of over ten years age, but we’re still drinking 2005 vintage wines from Blowly that taste fresher and more organic than pretty much all of the 2020 schlock you can find crowding/littering the shelves of the big bottle megamarts. But we digress!

Some metaphorical tasting notes from our Blowfly vertical Shiraz tasting.

Blowly 2005 Shiraz – There is a brooding inkiness to this wine that calls to mind an ominous storm cloud… Powerful undercurrents and broad torrents swirl around a heart of darkness. A powerful and satisfying wine that deluges the palate with dark flavours.

The Blowfly 2006 Shiraz somehow evokes an army of soldiers, marshalling for war. There is a broadness to this wine, but also broad cohesion and purpose that tie it seamlessly together. Fills the palate before funneling toward a long, smooth finish.

The Blowfly 2007 Shiraz evokes the legendary Excalibur, awaiting worthy hands in its sheath of earth and stone. Rarely does one encounter a wine of such distinction. It crackles with power and energy when it touches the palate – alert and alive and above all else noble – head and shoulders above the crowd. This wine frankly rejects 90%+ of the Hunter Valley pretenders that would claim rights to such authority. Long live the Blowly 2007 Shiraz…
