Blowfly must be Australia’s coolest & most characterful winery. The more we get to know this place, the more we absolutely love it – a wine geek’s dream made true. If you haven’t connected with Blowfly yet, you’re past due (we have no affiliation; they’re just that good). Call them up and explain what you like. You’ll be shocked at some of the opportunities to explore wine.
Blowfly recently afforded us the best wine experience that we’ve enjoyed in a good long time. They sent us a pack of six Petit Verdots, spanning four vintages & three styles. How is that for a vertical tasting?!?! First off, how many wineries do you know that even produce Petit Verdot? And of that tiny handful, how many could send you even two different PVs to try, let alone 6? To understate it, we were in bliss when we received this pack, which consisted of three straight Petit Verdots (across three vintages), two blends including Petit Verdot, and an Italian passito style PV.
In a dream world, we would have tried all these wines at once in the most epic vertical tasting ever. In the real world, after months of hard lockdown, Melbournites are now only allowed to visit with a couple guests from one other household, so we opted to split the tasting in half, saving the three straight PVs for a later date. See our tasting notes for these fabulous wines below. And ring up Blowfly so they can help you curate your own wine adventure!
* Blowfly 2006 Dorbeaux (Bordeaux Blend – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot) – waves of velvety soft flavours with a texture of light minerality roll indolently across the palate. Blueberry, violet and sour cherry alternately caress the tongue. Superbly smooth and elegant – an unusually steadfast capture of “Bordeaux”.
* Blowfly 2009 Val Cuna (Shiraz, Petit Verdot) – A very powerful wine casting primary notes of black raspberry wrapped in a cloak of lavender with just a few sprinkles of cracked pepper. There is a darkness at the heart of this direct but somehow still mysterious wine. Assertive Shiraz is definitely the core of this wine, and seductive Petit Verdot is definitely the cloak of mystery. Love it!
* Blowfly 2006 Maelstrom (Passito style Petit Verdot) – First off, we have always love the underused word maelstrom, so hat’s off there. And there is a little gun powder on the nose of this wine, to be fair, but the flavour is so refreshingly soft and wonderful – think blueberry cobbler with toasted crumble. How nice to enjoy an unfortified dessert wine…
