Located roughly between Canberra and Wagga Wagga, Gundagai is a small but notable NSW wine region. First planted in the late 1800s, Gundagai has enjoyed a sort of renaissance over the last few decades. For us, the region falls somewhere between Rutherglen and Orange (geographically, but more importantly, in terms of its wine profile). Gundagai can field a fairly wide range of wines, from super soft and smooth Sangiovese to Rhone-style Syrahs to very meaty Cab Savs. What’s most impressive about the wide range is the character these wines achieve (too often, regions producing wide varietal ranges can lead to some flattish wines – but not so here!) We’ve tasted ethereally smooth Sangioveses from here as well as Cab Savs that bewilder with their depth and diversity, and the most elegant and polished Syrahs.
Although there are only a handful of cellar doors in Gundagai, we highly recommend you call into a couple if you find yourself anywhere around this region. Put Tumblong Hills and Nick Spencer Wines on your list, and you’ll be glad you did!
