Margaret River’s Most Fabulous Cellar Doors

Margaret River is one of Australia’s most naturally beautiful wine regions, and it also boasts some of Australia’s most stunning cellar doors – probably a higher density of such than any place other than Barossa. It is truly a region in which one can easily and fully immerse oneself into the eternal romance that is wine. Should you find yourself desiring such an experience, the wineries below are guaranteed to deliver the goods.

Cullen Wines – If you book ahead, it may be the most impeccable service in Margaret River. Your choice of sparkling or still water (served in crystal) to refresh your palate between tastes. Their glorious wines, tasted in the most elegant wine glasses which are changed out for fresh ones between important tastings. The passionate and consummately professional staff. The building’s stunning granite and timber finishes. And above all, it’s the long veranda overlooking vast green lawns and seemingly endless vines that makes the place unforgettable.

Vasse Felix – From a distance, Vasse Felix must be Margaret River’s most striking cellar door building. The bi-level building almost looks like something out of Lord of the Rings. Hexagonal or perhaps octagonal (we didn’t count) with vines bursting from everywhere. Inside is all polished surfaces, clean angles, timber finishes, shiny glass and a feeling of eternal symmetry. The incredible vault and beautiful art gallery seamlessly tie the place between its glorious past and awesome present. All polish and pizzazz. You could easily spend a day wandering around the place and leave forever besmitten with the dream of Margaret River.

Leeuwin Estate – Perhaps it’s the beautiful art gallery downstairs. Or maybe the cush tables and chairs upstairs on the veranda overlooking the place’s gorgeous lawn and huge amphitheatre. Then again, it could be the polished tasting room, lit just so. There is so much here to sweep you far into romance of wine and wineries… For us, it was the $100 Chardonnay. One of the very best Chardonnays we have ever had and one of the very few that better than justifies its price tag.

‍‍‍‍‍‍Cape Mentelle – The godfather of Margaret River, Cape Mentelle exudes the region’s history and the grandeur of the heights it has reached. The sharp reds and deep browns of the stunning museum / barrel cellar room, the garden and traditional french pétanque lanes, the consummately professional staff in the tasting room … this place radiates with the gravitas of wine. In some ways a more serious experience than some of the other stops on this list, but one you need to fully flesh out your magical day in wine.

Voyager Estate – As an entire estate, Voyager’s is one of the most spectacular you will ever see, anywhere. Cobbled paths wind their ways through the electric green of immaculately manicured gardens. Hints of rose and more delicate florals float in the air. Inside the estate is reminiscent of an Argentinian hacienda house at the peak of the country’s ranching glory – opulent amounts of open space; perfect timber symmetry, a decadently huge semi-circle tasting bench… If you have to choose one wine estate that captured the word “beautiful”, Voyager must be it.

Wills Domain is such a glorious stop. The building is clean, airy, and bright. Behind you is a glass-enclosed wine vault, housing years of irreplaceable treasure. In front of you is the lavish semicircle tasting bench, staffed from the other side by the most professional staff – almost like the pit bosses on the floor of one of Vegas’s fanciest casinos. Far to your left an open kitchen where chefs labour greatly to produce only the best award-winning food. But most glorious of all, outside the seemingly endless dining veranda perched atop hills and hills of rolling vines. There is no more beautiful place to have lunch. On a sunny day, it really cannot be beat.
