Drinking this wine, at this stage, is like getting to live a few lives. As it changes in the glass or decanter over even an hour, the wine clearly evolves through marked (and very attractive) distinct identities. On first pour, the colour remains vibrantly inky and intense. Super rich raspberry and brooding vanilla flavours burst through – almost seething and stewie in their lusty power. But as time progresses, the flavour nova consolidates toward a Shiraz playground with a cornucopia of gentle savoury notes around the periphery. Think cinammon, winter mint, peppered black raspberry & cardamom.
In all, straight out of the bottle or an hour later, this wine is an extraordinary winner. It satisfies, it engages, it remains balanced for all its power, and best and worst of all, it leaves you bereft when it’s gone … Few, few indeed are the AUS Shirazes that retain such power and complexity 8 years on…
