There are so many hidden gems in Heathcote (the last best place to “discover” wine treasure), but very few shine so brightly as She-Oak Hill. Planted way back in 1975 by the Leckie family, She-Oak Hill stands alongside Jasper Hill Winery and a few others titans as one of the founding pioneers of modern Heathcote wine. The Leckie family runs She-Oak Hill to this day, and although they don’t have a formal cellar door, if you arrange in advance, the wonderful Jane Leckie herself will treat you to a tasting on the “veranda” of the shed the family first lived in when the vineyard was being established.
The hallmark of Heathcote, its ancient red Cambrian soils, coupled with astute dry-grown viticulture by-hand and one of the region’s best winemakers (Mark Hunt of the now legendary Sanguine Estate Wines) regularly leads to one of Heathcote’s best Shiraz in She Oak’s. She Oak’s Shiraz is a soaring wine of restrained power, waves of soft tannin, perfectly balanced fruit, and elegance throughout. The nuances of flavour may change at the edges from vintage to vintage, but the adjectives of the previous sentence always apply. Put short, you are unlikely to ever find a better AUS Shiraz than what She-Oak Hill makes. There is a reason the place takes home gold medals again and again from one of Australia’s most premier wine shows (The Saint Martin Heathcote Wine Show). Their gold medal-winning 2015 Shiraz is one of the best we’ve ever had!
We strongly encourage you to contact Jane Leckie and arrange a visit. It is a genuine and consummately rewarding wine experience. True wine treasure ….
