Beechworth (VIC) is a plucky community of small but determined wineries that have really forged something remarkable. To those who know it at all, Beechworth is perhaps most famous for its Chardonnay and Giaconda, a heavily awarded Chardonnay house that really helped put the region on the map. But this small wine region (less than 300 acres under vine) with its mineral rich soils punches well above its weight class and today produces a fairly wide variety of notable wines (as you will see below).
We recently attended a Beechworth wine tasting session put on by Revel. (We encourage you again to check out some of the events Revel is throwing these days; they are great!). Below are some truly outstanding wines we found. Hopefully they will encourage some of you to go check out this magical little region. It’s only about three hours out from Melbourne.
* Weathercraft Wines 2017 Shiraz – A very well textured and structured cool climate Shiraz. Soft, but assertive all the same. A great entry point into a exploration of Beechworth Shiraz.
* Virago Beechworth Nebbiolo 2015 Nebbiolo – This is truly a magical wine; such an elegant and beautiful Nebbiolo. Broad character is tenderly delivered with focus and great poise. Dances lithely across the palate.
* The Ninth Mile 2017 Mayday Pinot Noir – A lush and satisfying middle-of-the-road Pinot that ticks all the Pinot satisfaction boxes perfectly.
* The Ninth Mile 2017 Stanley Pinot Noir – Clearly from the same family as the Mayday just above, but the Stanley vineyard fruit has led to a more polished an elegant affairs, that almost scream French in its finesse.
* Serengale 2017 Chardonnay – Beautiful softly drawn butter with hints of honeysuckle, vanilla, and peach. Slides across the palate far too easily!
* Willem Kurt Wines 2016 Shiraz – Simply beautiful. Somehow bright and vibrant but dark and deep at the same time. A serious and elegant wine.
* Piano Piano 2017 Chardonnay – A gorgeous and very well balanced Chardonnay that offers a little of everything vanilla, citrus, even hints of leather. An engaging and satisfying Chardonnay all around.
