Summary:
Houghton is the largest and oldest winery in the Swan Valley and boasts easily the region’s most striking cellar door. They welcome you to bring a picnic to enjoy on their expansive and well manicured lawns. The wines, produced from grapes from several WA wine regions, range from good to great.
The challenge with Houghton, as with so many large wineries, is that the cellar door is geared more towards hospitality commerce than true wine enthusiasm. The casual visitor’s tasting choices are limited to three (in our opinion too limited) preset tasting flights. The staff are lovely and if you can convince them you really care about wine, they may let you try more. But if you just want something easy, plan to come here for a picnic lunch.
