Summary:
If one’s sole parameter for evaluation were the quality of the wine per dollar spent, McHenry Hohnen would have to be our top pick in Margaret River. In our most recent visit to the region, we would put their Cab Sav at the top of the charts (no mean feat for Margaret River!) At $58, that’s $30 to $50 less than its peers in the same weight class. Better yet, their SGM was outstanding for only $28, and at $38 each, the Tempranillo and BDX were extraordinary. Of course as vintages change, so do the particulars, but for a winery of this calibre, we’d expect similar gems in similar price ranges every year.
The quality of wine McHenry Hohnen achieves should be no surprise. Though founded in 2004, the history of the founding partners in the region goes back much further. In fact, a different iteration of Hohnen once owned Cape Mentelle, one of the seminal wineries that put Margaret River on the AUS wine map. Some of the vines that produced Cape Mentelle’s wines now supply MH’s bottles 🙂 Today, MH owns three vineyards that are organically and biodynamically managed. Small wonder their wines are so expressive.
The cellar door is a fairly basic affair, and that’s fine by us. It most always means that all of the attention and investment are going towards making great wines. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Go visit today.
