Summary:
With a history and plantings stretching back to the 1970s, Cullen is a true pioneer, and dare we say prophet of the Margaret River Wine Region. Since 2013, the place has been certified fully biodynamic and organic, and it also became the first carbon-neutral winery and vineyard in Australia. Cullen has always been a family affair; winemaking is currently directed by Vanya Cullen, daughter to the founders.
Cullen’s cellar door is remarkably beautiful, and its staff generous and impeccably professional. We would have loved calling in even if the place just served water. But, of course, this is not the case. Cullen boasts a range of wines, each of individual character. To us, Cullen is a sort of counterbalance to neighbouring Woodlands. Whilst the latter produces heavier, assertive wines, Cullen’s are more mercurial and beguiling – usually lighter affairs that dance around the palate and captivate imagination. A must stop in the MR.
