Summary:
Soumah is an interesting one. There is no question that it should be top of your list to visit in the Yarra. The place has been at the forefront of pioneering new varietals and ideas in the region in recent years. While all of their wines are more than adequate, some achieve greatness. (We loved the incredible 2015 Cabernet d’Soumah – surprisingly pleasant combo of ripe blueberry and textured leather, fresh but mature, and with such a lengthy finish.)
On the other hand, we sometimes have the feeling that Soumah is still trying to find its exact place in things. The evolving cellar door and private tasting room are gorgeous, but the staff can be hectic, frenzied, and too often grumpy. And then the tastes themselves are a little too small. We advocate any good taste should be enough for two full sips. Not quite so here. Still, all up, you must visit to try these wines. Some of the best and least Yarresque in the Yarra.
