Summary:

Giant Steps has taken giant steps indeed over the last few years authoritatively asserting itself atop the Yarra Valley serious wine scene.  What they are achieving with nuances of Yarra Pinot is amazing.

Giant Steps is now a moody and atmospheric affair that feels “serious”. Passing through the main elegantly appointed restaurant area (with an impressive menu – try the pork belly and noodles), you enter into a wine tasting room that is nothing short of stunning. High ceilings, wood panels, earthy colours, a beautiful wine wall, racks of oak barrels, and the deep smell of wine permeating every pore of the space – the place feels like you’ve landed in a very luxurious hotel lounge, or in your favourite chair in your library at home. You won’t find vines or scenic hills here, but you sure won’t miss them.

The tasting experience has improved dramatically at Giant Steps, but more importantly, the wines themselves have become something to write home about. Serious, elegant, balanced, and expressive are words we would use to describe the range. With five vineyards spread across various Yarra climes, the winemakers are able to coax ample variety in profile from their grapes. This was well on display with their 2016 vintage.  If Giant Steps makes any missteps at all at this point, it is in making a few decisions too commercially, such as releasing a vintage six months before it’s really ready.  All up the place is great; you need to visit.
