Summary:

Founded in the early 1980s by the legendary John Ellis, Hanging Rock was one of the first wineries in Macedon and probably more than any other, really put Macedon on the map as a credible wine region.  Over they years, Hanging Rock has enjoyed growing commercial success, and with this has come an expanded range of wines including some for export.  If you have limited scope for tasting, we recommend you stick to the mid- and top-ranges.

Hanging Rock is a true can’t-miss. Wineries that can produce consistent quality across their core range are few and far between. Hanging Rock ticks all of its boxes. The Pinot Noirs boast a perfect level of light spice that dances around the palate – a beautiful expression of pinot. The Sangiovese is savoury and built for a nice steak or stew – a bargain. Finally, the flagship Heathcote Shiraz is deep and pure – an elegant expression of Australia’s most famous red.  Hanging Rock would also be among the top two or three producers of traditional method cool climate sparkling wine (a style they were instrumental in kickstarting) in all of Australia today.
