Set along Northern Victoria’s Alpine slopes three hours from Melbourne, the King Valley must be VIC’s most scenic wine region. The beautifully picturesque area has come a long way in its relatively brief history in wine. From being considered primarily a postcard photo opportunity weekend get-away in natural wonder (with a little wine thrown in for good fun), the KV is now known as a serious wine region occasionally producing some of Australia’s most distinct cool climate wines.
Australia’s first Prosecco was planted in the King Valley, and that remains the varietal for which it is still best known. The region’s Italian heritage and wine style, though, have eventually led to its recognition for outstanding Pinot Grigio, Barbera, Sangiovese, and Nebbiolo as well (the latter three being Italy’s holy red trinity). Looking forward, it won’t be long before the elegant cool climate Shiraz coming from here is widely recognised as well.
