Established in 1978, Heathcote Winery is one of the region’s oldest. The winery’s experience and the relatively older age of some of their vines clearly show in their superb Shiraz. Their “entry level” Mail Coach Shiraz is a reliably exceptional representation of a great Heathcote Shiraz, and their Slaughterhouse Paddock can reach the top 1% of all AUS Shiraz. Heathcote Winery considers itself a Shiraz specialist, and we would agree. Having said that, they currently produce a Cab Sav from Ellis’ sterling fruit which is well worth trying, and we are absolutely smitten with their 2018 Rosé.
Heathcote Winery’s characterful cellar is built into a restored 1854 miners produce store. Cute and quaint, you’ll definitely feel you’re in the Bendigo region. Unfortunately, the tasting can be imperfect depending on the day. The place can get busy and you may have to wait (fair enough), but sometimes, some staff are not able to answer what we would consider basic wine questions. Still and all, you can’t miss such an exceptional Shiraz house. Pay a visit and see for yourself.
