Summary:

Stefano Lubiana – A True Highlight of Tasmania

Stefano Lubiana Wines is one the true seven or eight “cannot miss at any cost” wine stops in Tasmania. A visit here is a winemaking masterclass. Each wine you taste absolutely sings of passion restrained by discipline. You can literally taste the care taken in the vineyard and the craft exhibited in the winery with each sip. This is a special and unusual level of wine we are talking about. If you love serious wines, few wineries in Australia rival this place.

Stefano Lubiana’s vineyard was established in 1990 after years of searching for what he believed to be Australia’s best wine-producing terrain. Today, SL has 60 acres, biodynamically managed (which shines through in the wines). The cellar door is stunning (think Tassie meets Tuscany) with sweeping views and vine covered verandas. You simply have to visit on your next trip to Hobart. Their website sums it perfectly: “The level of character and quality of his wines are seamlessly crafted at his renowned estate and he continues to excel with every vintage.”

The wines we loved most on our last visit:

* 2017 Pinot Gris – Super fruity with an unusually complex and altogether engaging mix of flavours. Immaculately balanced. One of the best Gris we’ve ever had. $33

* 2017 Primavera Chardonnay – A light dancer across your palate, this one titillates with hints of oak, tangerine, and lemon essence. Perfectly balanced. $33

* 2016 Merlot – A plump Merlot that exhibits an earthy depth with some intriguing smokiness in the background. Long, polished finish. One of the better AUS Merlots we’ve had. $38

They also have a $100 Chardonnay that belongs in a museum it’s so special. As one TripAdvisor review correctly summed it: “The wines are not at the low price end but are so well worth the money. We tried the sparkling and the most amazing pinot gris – pale peach coloured and magnificently complex in flavour.”

Stefanio Lubiana exemplifies #WhyWeLoveWine. Happy hunting!

Stefano Lubiana is technically in the Derwent River wine region. Because there are fewer wineries there and it is a stone’s throw from the Coal River Valley, we have placed it in the Coal River category.
