Summary:

2022 Update:  Izway has steadily become pretty much our favourite red wine house in Barossa – pause to think on that; it’s a fairly huge thing to say!  Because their production is so relatively small and sometimes outright tiny, the lovingly made wines are exceptional (but Izway is often “sold out” of certain intriguing parts of their range 🙁  Emphasis on “exceptional” – whatever wines they have about will reward your visit handsomely.  Be sure to try the 2020 Harold Shiraz. All the promise of the Harold’s stunning nose doesn’t let you down – this beguiling beauty couldn’t be smoother (hallmark of Eden Valley fruit), but it also boasts the raw power and playfulness of quintessential Barossa at its best.  And if they have a bottle open, YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST try the 2017 Oscar & Matilda Shiraz.  This wine so perfectly embodies the alluring mystery, the maddening paradox, the siren’s promise & the sublime glory that define the magic that is wine.  It may well be the best Shiraz we have ever had the privilege to try…

*****

Izway represents so much of what we love about the Australian wine industry and small wineries in particular.  (Just a few years old, Izway is one of the smaller and more experimental wineries in Barossa.)  Here you’ll find a young team of dedicated winemakers trying new things. And to them, wine means community. They’re not fighting for the same pie, they are trying to grow the pie. In fact, they have directed us to a number of Barossa gems. The team at Izway could not be more-friendly.

Notable to Izway wines are their stark and striking colours and unique flavour profiles. All of them are great; a couple are absolutely epic.  While this is a winery well worth visiting now, we expect even more amazing things in the years to come. At only $25, the 2015 Mates Aglianico/Mataro will give you an idea of what these guys are capable of – a yummy savoury wine, lightly spiced (white pepper and green oak with hints of chocolate) and with surprising depth. Perfect texture and complexity.  Then there is the powerhouse Rob & Les; a straight on Shiraz of great depth and clarity.  This is a definitely a winery to watch.
