Pinot Palooza 2019 – Still AUS’ Most Spectacular Pinot Noir Event!
Another year, another mind-blowing Pinot Palooza with some 90+ Pinot Noir producers on hand to sample their wares. Yes the event is a carnivalesque madhouse, but it is also a singular opportunity to comprehensively understand the Southern Hemisphere’s range with this noble varietal. Where else in this world are you going to find such legendary producers as Akarua, Burn Cottage Vineyard, CHARTERIS WINES, Craggy Range Winery, Curly Flat Vineyard, Ghost Rock Wines & Cellar Door, Henschke, Lyons Will Estate, Medhurst Wines, Shaw + Smith, Stonier Wines, Yabby Lake Vineyard – Mornington Peninsula & so many more under one roof? The definitive “can’t miss” for any lover of Pinot Noir.
So many good wines on the day. We obviously couldn’t make it to every stand, but following are the picks from the visits we did get in:
* Curly Flat Vineyard 2016 Pinot Noir – A serious and broad wine with bright acid, playful cherry, and a wide palate. Great take on Macedon Pinot!
* Ghost Rock Wines & Cellar Door 2018 Rosé – Surprising fruit power and pleasant perfume. Rich with textures and layers. If you’re sick of all the austere Roses, try this!
* Ghost Rock Wines & Cellar Door 2018 Supernatural – A very earthy, rustic, textural and altogether satisfying Pinot!!! We can’t help feeling that if you are into “terroir”, this is a sure expression of TAS time and place.
* Akarua 2019 Pinot Rouge – A nice wine built for versatility. Nothing but beautiful fruit floats on the palate. Totally smashable; you wouldn’t guess it’s 13.5%! Sold out before the show’s end.
* Rockburn Wines Devil’s Staircase 2018 Pinot Noir – Another drink now winner. Plush cherry – could almost be a Syrah with no sour or edge.
* Yabby Lake Vineyard – Mornington Peninsula Single Block 5 – The height of Pinot elegance delivered. As good as Mornington gets.
* Stonier Wines 2016 Merron’s Vineyard – Cherry, but the most elegant cherry. Floats around the palate as if on a cloud.
* Stonier Wines 2016 Lyncroft Vineyard – Picks up a little spice, but still hyper-polished elegance. Such a delicious Pinot!
* Lightfoot & Sons Wines Myrtle Point Rosé 2017 – Plump blueberry equals immediate satisfaction in this delicious beaut.
